Alzheimer’s Program FAQ

1. What is Counseling?

Counseling therapy, psychotherapy, or talk therapy offers you a chance to spend dedicated time on yourself with a professional who can help you unpack your story, get to the root of issues, and give you clarity on your past and your present.

Counseling often leads to a significant reduction in feelings of distress, increased satisfaction in interpersonal relationships, greater personal awareness and insight, increased skills for managing stress and resolutions to specific problems, resources and support on continued care planning. Counseling may involve exploring uncomfortable feelings, but it is shown to have great benefits to those who undertake it.

2. What is Occupational Therapy?

Essential daily activities can be more difficult for some than others. Our board-certified and licensed occupational therapist is here to provide support with issues related to everyday tasks such as bathing, health management, sleep, social participation, and more. The MOTR/L will evaluate and develop a plan of intervention specific to your needs using evidence-based procedures. You have the right to informed participation in decisions involving your health care.

3. How long is service?

The length of the service depends on your needs and can vary from case to case. Some people feel they get most of the value after just a few weeks, while others prefer to stick to the program for an extended period. You have the right to decide how long you want service to be. You can discuss the length of the treatment with your service providers.

4. How can I receive services from my service provider?

You can communicate with your service provider in person at our office located in Chinatown or at your home (contact us directly to see if you are qualified.) or virtually via phone or video conferencing. Phone sessions are a great way to conveniently speak with your provider by simply using your direct line or cell phone, no matter where you are. You may also choose to meet with your provider via video conferencing where you see and talk with each other in a virtual face-to-face setting.

To use the Zoom function, you need to have a smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer with downloading app Zoom, and a stable internet connection. You may also need an email address so your therapist can send the video conferencing link via your email.

You can use different ways at different times as you wish, based on your needs, availability, and convenience. You can contact us at 312-791-0418 or email us at Alzheimers@CASLservice.org.

5. Who will be helping me?

After you sign up for our services, a certified professional will schedule an intake session and consultation. We will match you with a service provider who fits your objectives and preferences and specializes in the type of issues you are dealing with. If you start the process and you feel your service provider isn’t a good fit for you, we will try our best to meet your needs with internal or external referrals.

Counseling services providers are Licensed Health Care Professional or other Licensed Clinician, Mental Health Professional (MHP), or Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP), as defined in 59 Ill. Adm. Code 132.25. All of them have a master’s degree or a doctorate degree in their field. They have been qualified and certified by their state’s professional board after successfully completing the necessary education, exams, training and practice. A counseling/social work student or other mental health related student completing their fieldwork may also provide services under direct supervision of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Physician, Advanced Practice Nurse with Psychiatric Specialty, or Clinical Psychologist.

Occupational therapy services are provided by a licensed and registered Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) and/or by a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) under the supervision and guidance of a OTR/L. The OTR/L is licensed in the state of Illinois and has at minimum a master’s degree in occupational therapy. An occupational therapy student completing their fieldwork may also provide services under direct supervision of a registered and licensed OT.

6. How long do I need to wait for the service?

This process can take up to 7 business days, depending on the provider’s availability. Your service provider will contact you via phone or email for you to start the service.

7. How do I know if the Alzheimer’s Program is a good fit for me?

It’s common to wonder if increased forgetfulness should be concerning or not. Our certified professionals are here to provide free cognitive screenings for any irregularities in cognitive functions. If you’re concerned about the cognitive functions of yourself or your loved one, or you are looking to improve the quality of you or your loved one’s life, we may be able to help.

Our Alzheimer’s Program is NOT the right solution for you if any of the following is true:

  • You are in an urgent crisis or an emergency situation, please dial 911 or 988 for immediate assistance.
  • You cannot participate in services on a regular basis.
  • You are not an Illinois resident.

8. Can I be reimbursed through my insurance plan?

Coverage and benefits for services change from one health insurance company to another and from plan to plan. In many cases, before you can get reimbursed by your insurance company, your service provider would have to diagnose you with a behavioral health disorder or issue. This diagnosis would be sent to the insurance company and recorded in your medical file. In some cases, the service provider would also have to provide additional clinical information to the insurance company, such as treatment plans, summaries or copies of the entire record. Please note that our offers are very affordable, and sliding scale and fee waiving are available if you are eligible. Contact us to learn more about your eligibility.
